Feburary 3, 2023

Ahoy Friends,

Our Boatshops are bustling with activity getting the fleet ready for service. We have two small, beautifully finished lapstrake rowboats on display now that are worth the trip to our little museum. One of them is a Lake Oswego rowboat built by students last year under the guidance of Eric Hvalsoe. The other boat is an older Hvalsoe-designed 15’ boat that has been under restoration for the last couple of years by a few of CWB’s dedicated volunteers at their home. Both of these designs are represented in our permanent hanging exhibits, where you can learn about their history. These particular vessels will join CWB’s livery in the spring! We pride ourselves at bringing history to life at CWB, and these two vessels add a little more context to that mission.

Happy Sails,

Josh Anderson
CWB Executive Director

Chris Chase
Western Flyer History and Restoration Project

February 17th at 6PM in the WEC Sail Loft

Chris will begin by discussing the famous fishing vessel's history, from her build in Tacoma, WA in 1937 to her voyage in the Sea of Cortez with John Steinbeck and beyond. He will also go into detail about the decision to fully restore the Western Flyer and the journey of rebuilding her over the last 5 years!

The Port Madison Pram Build is off to a great start!

The first building session for the pram was in January.
Students who registered for the first session assisted Eric Hvalsoe with the lofting stage of the build.
Lofting is the process of drawing a boat at full scale from multiple angles and perspectives. These drawings are overlayed with each other so the builder can collect important information for making parts, pieces, and molds. These pieces are then used to begin building the boat's backbone and shape!

In the next session Eric will work with students to use the lofting floor to build molds and transoms (the flat part of the bow and stern) and set up the strongback and backbone of the boat.

To participate in this historic build, register for a session online here.
The Port Madison (PM) Pram was specifically designed by renowned NW yacht designer William (Bill) Garden for the Port Madison Yacht Club (PMYC) located on Bainbridge Island. The first three boats were owned by founding members of the club in the late 1950s.

These prams were designed with their users in mind. The Port Madison Yacht Club was founded by ordinary hardworking families who were in search of a sailboat design made of simple materials that could easily be sourced in a post war world. Bill Garden created the Port Madison Pram by utilizing marine plywood and waterproof glue in the design. This way it could be built from home and used for family sailing, youth training, and one-design racing! From the late 1950's to the 1970's it was not uncommon to spot these prams jaunting about Hidden Cove full of kids aboard, ruling the water from the helm.

In recent years, there has been a push for the revival of the Port Madison Pram by members of PMYC. Several restorations are currently underway, and one was recently completed by a group of PMYC members. Their hope for 2023 is to get 4-6 PM Prams in racing condition for selected events.

Did you know CWB once had a Port Madison Pram in our livery? We will again soon thanks to Eric Hvalsoe for leading the historic new build in our Bill Garden Boatshop!

Thank you to Paul Erb and the Port Madison Yacht Club for providing us with this information. Look out for next month's newsletter for more history about the PM Pram, and stories from those who hold dear memories of sailing them!

Fair Winds to Serena, our Boatwright Apprentice from January!

Serena visited CWB for two weeks from The Carpenter's Boatshop in Pemaquid, Maine. She participated in Eric Hvalsoe’s Port Madison Pram class where she learned more about west coast building styles and how to loft. She raved that it was the most she’s learned in that short of a time! She also participated in aiding Ducky, our Woodworking Programs Manager, in starting a Lake Union Swift build.

Serena expressed to our staff that she had a delightful time in Seattle, learned a lot, and received great hospitality from our community. Serena is currently in New Zealand for the next 6 months building boats. We hope to see her in our boatshop again!

Bring your Valentine to CWB for a row!

Did you know you can reserve one of our historic wooden rowboats for free through our Public Peapod Program? Although we will not be open on Valentine's Day this year, there is still plenty of time to bring your sweetheart for a romantic row around Lake Union - just like two peas in a pod!

January 11, 2023

Dear Friend of CWB,

Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year! We couldn’t be more excited for 2023, which we are referring to as the #YearOfThePram. We’re a bunch of boat nerds around here and are eager to celebrate this simple, yet seaworthy design. This month, we’ll begin construction of the Bill Garden-designed Port Madison Pram, his first design to be built in the aptly-named Bill Garden Boatshop. We will be sharing stories and the history of the design over the coming months as we construct the vessel. This is a participatory experience, so come check in on the build while you’re visiting or even sign up for a class to get your hands on the project!

When you renew your CWB membership this year, you'll receive discounts on our programs and a 2023 limited release member sticker featuring the Pram. Speaking of programs, registration for our youth summer camps is now open on our 大发平台体育靠谱吗! Did you know our youth beginning sailing classes are taught on 8’ prams called El Toro’s? As for adults, January is the perfect time to purchase a yearlong livery pass for unlimited sailing. We have four Pelicans available in our livery for rent which (can you guess?) is a pram with a bowsprit. All three of these boat designs originated on the west coast, so no matter your age there’s a Pacific Pram for you!

Fair Winds,

Upcoming and Current CWB Programs

If your 2023 resolutions include getting active, having more fun, learning a new hobby, or making friends, CWB has you covered.

Join us this year for one of the many courses you can register for today!
Bill (William) Garden was one of the most prolific boat designers in the Pacific Northwest throughout the 20th century.

He designed 51 boats by the age of 24 when he was drafted to serve in WWII. He became a naval architect after being posted at the Adak Ship Repair Base in the Aleutian Islands. The image to the left was taken during his time there.

During his career which spanned several decades, Bill designed hundreds of boats including gillnetters, yachts, trollers, sail boats and many more.
This month we will begin building our first Bill Garden-designed boat, the Port Madison Pram in the Bill Garden Boatshop!

To participate in a building session with renowed boatbuilder Eric Hvaloe, register online.
Join us for the inaugural 3rd Friday Speaker Series of 2023

This month, local boatbuilder Eric Hvalsoe will talk about the construction and history of the recently completed Lake Oswego Rowboat, built in classes at CWB last year. Eric will primarily focus on discussing the finishing techniques and products used on this newly built boat. Spring maintenance season is right around the corner, so this is a great opportunity to come with your questions!

This month's Third Friday Speaker will be on January 19th at 6:00 PM in the Bill Garden Boatshop.

Becoming a Volunteer at CWB

Meet Shanise Owens who began volunteering with us over the summer and learn about her experience so far!
Shanise’s favorite part of being a volunteer is benefiting from the shared knowledge of those in our community! She loves learning new things about boats, sailing, and the lake with every volunteer shift and how at CWB, no two days are the same.

Shanise credits CWB with being a place of escape where she can use her mind in a different way. When not volunteering at CWB, she is at UW School of Public Health pursuing a PhD in Health Services research. She says CWB “is a way for me to remove myself from the stress of everyday life and just be with the water and people'' who she describes as kind, welcoming, and patient.

From everyone at CWB, thank you to Shanise and all our amazing volunteers who do so much more than keep us afloat!

Dear Friend of CWB,

As the year comes to a close, I’d like to thank all of those who connected with CWB this past year. Whether visiting the campus, going for a sail, taking a class, contributing time or resources, or even reading this email, we appreciate you! Our community’s active involvement with CWB and each other is what makes this place special. I was particularly warmed seeing so many friends turn out for our volunteer appreciation party last month. We’ve got a great deal planned for the upcoming year and can’t wait to see you in 2023!

Cheers,

Josh

CWB held several events in 2022 that activated our docks and brought our community back together as the challenges of the pandemic eased up. These events are made possible by our generous donors and dedicated volunteers.
Keep your 2023 calendars on deck for another year of CWB events!

Free Boating Day

Photos above by CWB volunteer photographers Chris Greenly (L) and J.A Wiley (R).
CWB's first-annual Free Boating Day in April was an energizing start to boating season by encouraging the public to visit our docks for a day of free boating. With the help of our volunteers, we managed to get 345 people on the water and helped over 150 kids build toyboats in just 8 hours!

El Toro Regatta

Photos above by CWB volunteer photographers Chris Greenly (top & L) and Tommy Meisel (R).
This year's El Toro Regatta entailed two days of friendly racing in the calm and sunny August weather. One could not help but smile while watching 26 racers zoom around Lake Union in colorful El Toros!

17th Annual Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D Regatta

Photos above by CWB volunteer photographer J.A. Wiley
All wooden sailboats in CWB's fleet saw some thrilling action on Lake Union during our 17th annual Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta, which had the biggest turn out in recent memory! Over 30 boats including Pelicans, Thunderbirds, Lightnings, El Toros, and Norm Blanchard built Knockabouts carried 60+ sailors ages 10 to 70+. This regatta was definitely one for the books and we cannot wait to see what the 18th annual W.O.O.D. Regatta brings next year!
The very heart of CWB has always been centered around a love and deep admiration for wooden boats. This year we have made incredible progress in restoring historic wooden boats and in turn preserving the maritime history they represent.

Pamela Restoration

A huge accomplishment from this year was finally completing restoration of the Blanchard Junior Knockabout Pamela. 2021 Boatwright-in-Residence Apprentice Alec Smith began the project in 2021, which was then completed by our boatwright Dustin Espey. Pamela finally hit the water again this Spring and is now a lovely addition to our livery!

(Speaking of which, we're taking applications right now for our 2023 Boatwright-in-Residence Apprenticeship! Click here for more info. This CWB apprenticeship program is supported by the RPM Foundation.)

Pamela fully restored and on the water!

BJK Restorations at NLU

CWB's North Lake Union Campus has come a long way this year under the leadership of boatwrights Tom Jacobs and Dustin Espey, alongside a group of our hard-working volunteers. Consistent progress is being made on the restoration of several Blanchard Junior Knockabouts! Stay tuned to our social media for updates on this important restoration of historic wooden boats.
This restoration project is supported, in part, by 4Culture/King County Lodging Tax.

November 1, 2022

Dear Friend of CWB,

We’ve reached that time of year where things seemingly slow down a little bit. The docks are quieter these days, taking a deep (clean) breath of fresh air after a record busy summer season. We’re still hard at work though, as wooden boats never let you take that long of a break. The wood stove is roaring in the floating shop with a trove of maintenance projects lined up for the winter. North Lake Union is brimming with fresh shavings as Blanchard Jr. restoration continues. We’re also working on a whole host of new woodworking classes in the Bill Garden Boatshop, so stay tuned! It’s not just the vessels being worked on - our talented team is building an archive and cataloging our historic collection of documents, artifacts, and books. We can’t wait to share the progress on these projects with you in the coming months!

Fair winds,

Josh Anderson
Executive Director

Winter Hours

On November 2, we will switch to our winter hours: 10AM–4PM. Last boat out at 2:45 PM.
Greet the Season
Mark your calendars for the revival of South Lake Union Park's annual Greet the Season event on December 9th!

Festivities include family fun activities at The Center for Wooden Boats and the historic ships wharf including the Virginia V, Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society, and Northwest Seaport. More info to come.
We're Hiring!

We are currently hiring a Woodworking Programs Manager to lead both youth and adult related programs in the Bill Garden Boatshop. More information here.
Thanks for Celebrating Halloween With Us!
Thanks to everyone who came out to explore our campus and play our Halloween activity bingo this weekend! It was so much fun to see our campus filled with so many amazing costumes. Visitors could visit six stations to build a spooky toy boat, steal some candy from pirates, write their name in signal flags, learn a knot, sing a sea shanty, and even get some free hot cider!

We love being able to host free events for our community, powered by CWB supporters, members and volunteers.

We've had a busy year in our boat shops, welcoming a total of 45 students to build their own boats from Chesapeake Light Craft with us, supported by Casey Wilkinson from Kea Custom Boats

Our favorite part of these classes is seeing how building a boat can have an impact on people's lives. Friends, couples, family members and solo builders flew in from around the country (or drove in from around the corner) to experience the challenges and joy of building a vessel with their own two hands. And they had their work cut out for them–quite literally.

Here's how the flat packed kits came into the shop:
And here's how they can look when they leave!
This year, we held our first-ever CLC boatbuilding class at Cama Beach State Park, allowing students to stay in the cabins and draw inspiration from the waterfront as they worked hard in our Camano Island boatshop.
Congratulations to all of this year's hardworking students! If you're interested in building your own boat, please keep an eye on our woodworking programs page.
Lake Union Swifts
This summer, we launched three Lake Union Swifts, built entirely by youth for youth. They, too, were made with the stitch and glue plywood kits from Chesapeake Light Craft, but from a design created especially for us here at The Center for Wooden Boats.

The Swifts measure 11 feet overall, with a 52” beam and draft of 30” with the centerboard down. They weigh 150 lbs and carry 78 square feet of sail, marconi-rigged sloops with an aluminum mast and roller furling jib. They are a “pure sailing machine” according to the designer, John Harris of CLC.

The Lake Union Swift boats were built through our Youth Boatbuilding Internship that began at CWB in 2019 with teens from local high schools including Gibson EK in Issaquah, Big Picture School in Bellevue, and The Seattle Skills Center. Multiple internships were held during the school year and in the summers under the tutelage of CWB boatwright Dustin Espey.

The three new Lake Union Swifts are now being used to expand CWB's youth programming to teach middle and high schoolers to sail on Lake Union.

Friends of CWB,

September was a month of connection at CWB–we celebrated with so many old friends at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, at the Boats Afloat Show on Lake Union we were able to bring back our first off-site Toy Boatbuilding in several years, bringing smiles to hundreds of kids and their parents. Just last weekend, we hosted the largest Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta in recent memory, with over 30 boats on the water and 150 community members all gathering to share a meal and stories afterwards. Community is the driving force behind everything we do at CWB; thank you for being a part of our crew.

Fair Winds,

Josh Anderson
Executive Director

Fall Hours

We're currently open 10AM – 6PM, Wednesday - Sunday. Last boat out at 4:45.

On November 2, we will switch to our winter hours, and be open 10AM–4PM.
17th Annual Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta: 30+ Boats, 8+ Kts
This year's Regatta was one great, wonderful adventure with good breeze and bright skies. We were joined by over 30 boats and 60+ sailors for a full day of racing. All 13 boats from our own livery participated plus 5 Norm Blanchard-built wooden boats (each 70+ years old!) sailed in this homage to the formative boatbuilder and designer. The fleet was diverse, ranging from 8 to 32 feet across Pelicans, Thunderbirds, Lightnings, and El Toros, with sailors ages 10 to 70+, some bringing decades of experience and some brand new SailNOW! grads.
Thank you to our community for coming out, helping out, and enjoying this beautiful lake we call home!

Small Boats, Big Adventures

Ever considered camp cruising? Hear about the many advantages of small craft cruising as a perfect way to get close to nature and new coastlines, tiny creeks, beaches and coves larger boats can't reach. This is sailing back to the basics where a whole lot of great cruising adventures await. Come learn what small craft cruising is, what's involved, best boats and equipment plus some insider tips and tactics.

Lee Bjorklund is a volunteer CWB sailing instructor and has sailed in all Salish100 events and a dozen or so other week-long small craft cruises throughout Puget Sound and environs.

Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival 2022 recap
Thank you to all who came out and had fun with us!
We had a great time at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival–a big thanks to all who visited us at Big Wave Dave, aboard Halcyon, or on Puffin for a free ride around the Bay. We very much enjoyed sharing boats, stories, and connecting with fellow boat lovers. See you next year!
Sawhorse Revolution Launches an Ed Monk Skiff

We were excited to attend the launch of an Ed Monk Skiff that Sawhorse Revolution built with kids using molds and patterns we provided. The boat will be used by The Heron's Nest to help the Duwamish Tribe facilitate cleanup of the Duwamish River. This boat is the same make as La Mamalona, which we built with Seattle Public School students and launched last year.
Siebel Sailing with Seed2Fork and Modest Family Solutions
A few weeks ago, we were thrilled to welcome youth from Seed2Fork Farm and Modest Family Solutions for a week of Siebel Sailing lessons at CWB!

Seed2Fork is a nonprofit in Snohomish County teaching youth from underserved communities how to farm and prepare healthy food, and Modest Family Solutions distributes food to those in need.

When Seed2Fork’s Executive Director, Ada Alston, approached us about helping youth learning to develop a closer relationship to water (a vital ingredient for raising crops), we worked together to bring those kids in for a week of sailing curriculum. We had a great time!

Crabbing Season is Extended!

Fall is in full swing at our Cama Beach State Park location, and we have some exciting news: Crabbing season has been extended by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife from Oct 1 - Dec 31 this year, and it’s open 7 days a week! When you come in to rent a kayak, canoe, or paddle board, ask us about renting a crab pot so you can have some hot crab soup on these chilly fall evenings at Cama.

Ahoy Friends,

With Labor Day around the corner, we're able to look back on a wonderful and successful summer season. We're especially excited by the conclusion of our youth summer camps under the energetic leadership of our Youth Programs Manager, Leslie Smith! This year we taught the highest number of students we ever have, as we added the newly-built Lake Union Swifts to our growing youth fleet, in addition to our third year with the RS Feva’s from US Sailing, and of course our El Toros. September is still a busy month for us as the weather is perfect for sailing. We’re excited to host the 17th Annual W.O.O.D Regatta on September 24th and hope to see you there. Even if you can’t participate, you're very much invited to the BBQ afterwards! Or stop by the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival to say hello. We’ll be well represented this year with our steam launch Puffin giving public rides, the student-build Hvalsoe 16 Big Wave Dave, and the Bill Garden designed salmon troller Halcyon. Looking forward to spending the last few weeks of summer on the water with you!

Fair Winds,

Josh Anderson

Join us September 24 for the 17th Annual Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta!
Entrants can skipper or crew a CWB small boat. The big-boat category will be sold out soon, and there are still great ways to participate in the regatta in a small CWB boat - or register and bring your own! Participating boats will be assigned a class rating, so no matter the size, you could win!

Racers and non-racers alike are welcome at the after-race barbecue. Tickets (for non-racers) are just $10 and cap off an amazing summer season with race awards, food, drink, and camaraderie. Hope to see you there!
If you’re registering to race a small CWB boat not in our normal livery (El Toro, Feva, or Lake Union Swift), we’ll offer a practice session the weekend of September 17-18th. Register and we’ll let you know the practice session times in advance!

At North Lake Union, Three Blanchards Are Being Restored
Closed to the public, but brimming with activity is our North Lake Union Campus! Excited to share some views of the progress boatwrights Tom Jacobs and Dustin Espey are making on Blanchard Jr Knockabouts Lucky 7Richard G and Betsy Jane with help from CWB volunteers! Stay tuned on our social media channels to see continued updates on this work.
Cama Beach Has Reopened

Throughout most of the summer we have had to reconcile with the fact that our Cama Beach location was deemed inoperable due to the sustained damage to the boat house structure, caused by winter storms. However, we are excited to announce a short-term, but hopefully fun solution, for the remainder of the summer.

As of late August, we're able to once again rent out kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards to individuals and families looking to get out on the water and enjoy the sun. Stop by the Cama Boat House to pick up one of these lightweight crafts and throw out some crab pots before the season ends!

Volunteering Highlight at Cama Beach

A big thanks to Cama Beach volunteers Russ Holmes and Michael Kyte for installing the "clothesline" for our safety boat! The clothesline is the "parking lot" for boats during the day here at Cama. Without a dock to tie up to, the clothesline acts as a temporary mooring for boats during the day, before being brought into the boathouse at night. Since we're able to rent out some canoes and kayaks now, this helps keep the safety boat readily available for emergencies and keeps the smaller craft outside for easy public use.

Michael and Russ installed an anchor so the line could run from the boathouse out to the water. Thank you so much for braving the cold Sound to help us out at Cama, Michael and Russ!
Come see us at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival!

We're excited to be participating in the Wooden Boat Festival this year with Hvalsoe 16 Big Wave Dave, Bill Garden-designed 1948 salmon trawler Halcyon, and our 1906 Truscott Steam Launch Puffin. See you there!
Remembering Tom Alberg

Last month marked the passing of Tom Alberg, a celebrated visionary and philanthropist who made many of our region’s innovations possible. He was also an avid sailor whose early support of CWB’s capital campaign was fundamental to building the Wagner Education Center in Lake Union Park, greatly expanding our programming and exhibit space. We are so grateful to Tom and his wife Judi for their ongoing generosity to CWB and other organizations throughout the region through the Raven Foundation. Tom’s legacy lives on through the many cultural and educational causes he supported, and the countless lives enriched by his efforts.
Art On Our Campus!

We were so delighted to host a plein air class from the Gage Art Academy for teens on our campus! The academy offers classes of all kinds for all ages! A vignette here from one of the artists, Eleanor Doughty. To keep an eye on activities of this kind, check out the Seattle chapter of Urban Sketchers.
